Good morning, good morning!
I’m feeling pretty great this morning. My boyfriend and I are starting to kick ourselves into gear with a new diet/lifestyle change. I would really love to share the whole process with you guys so look forward to some future posts about my journey.
I am ALSO really excited for today’s post! So, I am that person with uber sensitive skin. Any sensitive skin ladies or gents relate? I was starting to get little bumps and rashy patches in very uncomfortable places – my armpits. So I took it upon myself to go on a deodorant-testing journey. I tested several hand-made and natural deodorant brands, and compared them with two drug store deodorants. I contacted several Etsy buyers to request use of their beautifully taken photos, and I will leave links to all of their shops below!
To start us off, I used two drug store deodorant brands as a comparison:
Drug Store Deodorant
I had been using Secret deodorant for years. Probably ever since I was in middle school. So, switching to a new deodorant, after having used my trusted brand for so many years, was a challenge. Needless to say, I had high expectations for my new deodorant to live up to. The Tom’s deodorant is a newer one. I was using it for about a month and decided it would be good to include a mini review of it here.
Scent: 10/10 This deodorant smells amazing!
Consistency: 10/10 Stick deodorant, which applies really smoothly.
Length of Wear: 10/10 This deodorant will actually last more than all day for me. I can still smell it the next morning sometimes.
Transferability: 8/10 Almost no deodorant transfers to clothes, but it occasionally does if I sweat.
Ease of Use: 10/10 Very easy to use.
Other thoughts: The deodorant was starting to irritate my skin.
Tom’s Long Lasting Deodorant
Scent: 6/10, I really loved the smell of this deodorant initially. But after it’s on me for a few hours, it starts to have this really funky scent that is not cute. I don’t want a deodorant that makes my pits smell worse after applying it!
Consistency: 8/10, Stick deodorant with a very wet feel to it. I had to let my pits dry before putting on clothes.
Length of Wear: 5/10, this will last me about half the day. If I applied at 8am, I needed to reapply at 1pm.
Transferability: 2/10, This deodorant has zero antiperspirants in it. So, if you sweat, it will show. Even without sweating, I found that this deodorant made my clothes wet under the armpits.
Ease of Use: 10/10, As it is a stick deodorant, it’s very easy to apply.
Other thoughts: I will likely not repurchase this product.
I used these deodorants as a basis of comparison for my non-drugstore finds. I hunted around on Etsy (cause I love to support small businesses) and came up with these interesting finds!
Happy Hippy Pitstick by OnePlanetEcoVillage
Scent: 15/10, I seriously LOVED how this deodorant smelled! I love the smell of peppermint and this was not too overpowering and not overly subtle. Love, love, love.
Consistency: 8/10 The consistency is pretty smooth.
Length of Wear: 7/10, I found that I did have to reapply a second time during the day, but on an average day, this deodorant, applied at around 8am, would last until about 2 or 3pm.
Transferability: 10/10 None! No wet pits = a happy Liz!
Ease of Use: 7/10, Because it is in bar form, this deodorant can be a little messy to apply, but if you use a cloth or something to hold the deodorant with, it won’t melt in your fingers!
Other Thoughts: Overall, I really loved this product. My only issue was the application, but once I found a method that worked, I had no issues! I would absolutely repurchase this product. Plus, those of you zero waste individuals may want to give this a try. The deodorant is minimally packaged.
Lavender Peppermint Gentle Deodorant by CocoLavish
Scent: 10/10, A very nice delicate scent – of course, I love the lavender and peppermint together!
Consistency: 5/10, this deodorant is not very smooth so it can be a little tricky to apply. They recommend a really thin layer, so DO NOT apply more than that! It’ll start to peel off on you.
Length of Wear: 8/10, this will last me pretty much all day.
Transferability: 8/10, the arrowroot powder in this product acts sort of like an antiperspirant would. I LOVE that part about it. This is a deodorant that I can sweat in and not have to worry. If you put too much product on your pit, it can transfer a little, but comes out super easy in the wash.
Ease of Use: 8/10, the product itself can be a little dry, but after you’ve warmed it up on your skin, it’s a lot easier to work with. The stick form makes it a lot easier as well.
Other Thoughts: Overall, this product can be a little difficult to work with if you apply too much, but if you apply the correct amount, is really a gem! Great smelling and long lasting! I would repurchase.
Lil’ Deodorant Cream by FatandtheMoon
Scent: 8/10, I first I wasn’t totally sure about the smell, but it grew on me and now I really like it. It’s got a very herb-y kind of a smell.
Consistency: 10/10, A slightly grainy but mostly smooth cream. Grainy from the arrowroot and baking soda. I actually really loved the consistency of this product. It blends like a dream onto skin!
Length of Wear: 6/10, typically this will last me most of the day, but I sometimes have to reapply if I have been really physically active.
Transferability: 10/10 Does. Not. Transfer. At. All. Not even a little bit. It melts into your skin and leaves this really nice scent.
Ease of Use: 10/10 Very easy to use. It was kind of like applying a lotion on your armpits. It comes in this cute small tin (you can get a larger version), which was amazing for traveling. I’m bringing it on all my trips!
Other Thoughts: This might have been my favorite natural deodorant that I have ever tried. It was just so easy to use and calmed my sensitive skin by giving a lot of moisture from coconut oil. I absolutely plan to repurchase this product.
Everyone’s pits are different, so your experience trying different deodorants will probably be different than mine. The Etsy sellers listed are seriously amazing though. They all shipped to me quickly and were super nice to me – one of the deodorant makers shipped my deodorant in paper instead of plastic for me and another seller gave me a face mask sample. Overall, I highly recommend them all!
So what deodorant do you use? Thinking about going a more natural route? Let me know in the comments below!
Good luck to you, where ever you are on your journey.
